Tiny Trailer Abattoir Report Released

Scotland’s first movable sheep and goat abattoir is set to become operational in Orkney later this year, offering a new approach to supporting crofters, small producers and high-welfare meat production in remote areas.

The Tiny Trailer Abattoir (TTA) has been developed in response to the growing challenges around local slaughter provision in the Highlands and Islands, where animals often face lengthy journeys to mainland abattoirs. Designed as a small-scale facility, the TTA aims to complement existing abattoir infrastructure rather than replace it.

Our new proposal document explores how the facility will operate, the opportunities and barriers for similar models elsewhere in Scotland, and what could be needed to support more localised and resilient food systems in the future.

This report was created in collaboration with Orkney Boreray and thanks to support from the Scottish government’s Small Producer Pilot Fund.  We aim to update the report once the facility is in operation and more information becomes available.
