The Croft Woodland Project (CWP) offers free advice and support to crofters, common grazings committees and the wider crofting community to create new native woodland and shelterbelts. CWP advisors can also help with enquiries around improving the management of existing native woodland. This support is available to smallholders in the Crofting Counties, and for general enquiries from non-crofters.
Grant funding is available for small-scale native tree planting and hedges, and there are free tree packs for schools and community groups. CWP can also help with advice and the costs of preparing and submitting an application to the Forestry Grant Scheme, for larger planting schemes.
The Croft Woodland Project is a partnership between Scottish Crofting Federation, Woodland Trust Scotland, Point and Sandwick Trust, Scottish Forestry, Coigach & Assynt Living Landscapes, Shetland Amenity Trust, Orkney Woodland Project, and the Communities Housing Trust. CWP is currently in its second 5-year phase, until May 2026.
