SCF QUESTIONS THE COSTS OF CUTTING KEY LOCHABER FERRY SERVICE

The Scottish Crofting Federation has written to the Scottish Government asking for urgent clarification of their proposed “replacement” for the present vehicle ferry service between West Ardnamurchan and Tobermory on the Isle of Mull.

The Government’s ferry review has proposed replacing the current vehicle and passenger service between Kilchoan in Ardnamurchan and Tobermory on Mull with a passenger only service. The authors of the Government review believe that the passenger only service “would continue to meet the needs of the local community”, a claim that the local branch of the Scottish Crofting Federation has argued is nonsense. Crofters there are concerned that the proposal will have a devastating impact on the area, including multiple harmful effects on agricultural activity. One of these will be the loss of access to the abattoir on Mull which would leave crofters facing a round trip of two hundred miles to get their animals slaughtered, with economic and animal health implications.
