Cultural heritage, empowering crofters and valuing the crofting way of life were the main themes at the SCF annual gathering in Dingwall last week. The conference, entitled ‘Crofting culture – it grows on you’ was supported by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and celebrated the cultural richness of crofting communities; in traditional land use and skills, in innovation, in language, in music and in food produced from the croft.
Delegates heard the self-proclaimed “Crofting Minister”, Michael Russell, contribute to the theme of empowerment, when he pledged government support for the direction desired by crofting communities. He announced a continuation of the Crofting Community Development Scheme to assist in drawing up community development plans.
