SCF GAINING ON REFORM BILL, BUT A WAY TO GO

The Scottish Crofting Federation (SCF) had meetings with MSP’s across all parties in Edinburgh last week to discuss progress being made in getting a more workable Crofting Reform Bill.
Norman Leask, SCF Parliamentary Spokesman said “we are very pleased with the progress we have made on getting revisions to the bill and more unacceptable parts of the bill dropped, such as the housing burden. After intense lobbying we have also managed to also get the fee for croft registration down from £250 to a maximum of £130 and we are confident we can get it down further. Every croft is going to have to register eventually so getting the fee reduction is very beneficial for all crofters. This demonstrates how a representative organisation working with our MSP’s and government can get change. It is vital that crofters stand together as the next year is critical for the future of crofting.”
CROFTERS WELCOME VOLUNTARY BLUE-TONGUE VACCINATION

The Scottish Crofting Federation (SCF) welcomed the news that next year blue-tongue vaccination will be voluntary. Ena MacDonald, Chair of SCF Uist and Barra, who has been leading a campaign against compulsory vaccination, said “at last they are seeing sense. The SCF has lobbied very hard to get a change in this regime that was causing so many problems for no discernable benefit on the islands.”
CROFTERS PREPARE FOR REFORM DEBATE

The Scottish Crofting Federation have convened their reform working group to scrutinise the crofting reform bill launched today and are preparing for the debate to come, on whether the bill is fit for purpose.
Marina Dennis, chair of the SCF crofting reform working group, said “at first glance our reaction is that the government have listened to our response to the draft bill and have dropped some of the more widely rejected proposals such as the housing burden and use of croft tenancies to secure loans for housing. There are some potentially useful aspects to the bill if implemented sensitively and there are of course some proposals we will be seeking amendment to, such as costs to crofters”.
