All farm sales, auction markets and agricultural shows in Scotland can resume on Monday.

And as of midnight tonight Scotland's livestock keepers will be free from the foot and mouth movement restrictions.

Both moves are subject to strict conditions but they come on top of the lifting today of the ban on GB meat and live animal exports to Europe.

Two more movement ban amendments come into effect from midnight tonight as a result of appeals yesterday by the livestock industry and the improving disease picture.
Farmers will be allowed to move animals with acute welfare problems distances up to 50 km. At present movements are only permitted by specific licences up to 20 km.

FOOT AND MOUTH DISEASE IN SURREY - PROTECTING SCOTTISH INTERESTS

The recent outbreak of Foot and Mouth Disease in Surrey has had far reaching consequences.  As Cabinet Secretary for Rural Affairs I wanted to write to assure you of the efforts we are taking to respond to this situation and the efforts we are taking to mitigate its far reaching effects on the livestock sector.  In this the Scottish Government is ever vigilant, and prepared, for the introduction of exotic animal diseases into Scotland.  In this we work very closely with the other Governments of the UK.  We were informed late on the 3rd of August of the suspected case of foot and mouth disease in Surrey.  The Scottish Government reacted quickly following confirmation to protect Scotland’s interests and to ensure that all measures necessary to minimise the risk of disease spread were taken.

The Scottish Crofting Foundation welcomed the news from the Scottish Executive that they were aiming to relax livestock movement controls on the Scottish islands, shortly after a plea from the Chair of the Foundation Norman Leask.

SCF Condems Highland Council on Food Supply Contracts

The decision of Highland Council to award the vast majority of its food supply contract to mass catering suppliers based in the south of England has been condemned by the Scottish Crofting Foundation (SCF). As a result of the award, only a tiny proportion of the Council’s supplies will be sourced from farmers and crofters in the Highlands. This is in spite of an unprecedented tendering effort by local producers organised by Highlands and Islands Local Food Network.

PEPFAA Code for fallen Stock

The on farm burial ban of stock has temporarily been lifted.   The fallen stock collection scheme is presently suspended and in recognition of the problems that this will cause on farm burial is being permitted.   Anyone burying stock on farm must comply with the PEPFAA Code.
