Importance of Following Muirburn Code Highlighted

Crofting households account for around 30,000 people in the Highland and Islands – around 30% of households on the mainland and 65% of those on the islands. Over three quarters of a million hectares of land are under crofters’ stewardship. Crofting is the glue that binds rural communities across the Highlands and Islands. As well as an important part of our cultural heritage, it is an important part of our future, supporting a unique way of life, a diverse and rich environment, and a rural population in some of the most fragile areas of the Highlands and Islands.
SCF Launches Housing Study

Scottish Crofting Foundation (SCF) launched its ‘Housing on Crofting Land’ study at its Skye and Lochalsh Area AGM at Sligachan Hotel on Thursday night. The purpose of the study is to identify ways in which crofting communities can make land available for affordable housing without damaging crofting interests or encouraging speculation. The study will be carried out by Derek Logie of the Rural Housing Service, who has enabled many low-cost housing projects in rural Scotland. Derek will be assisted by Tiree-based housing worker Clare Jones. The study is the first of its kind to look specifically at the unique circumstances of crofting tenure.

Call for Special Rate for Neccessity Vehicles

Following yesterday’s budget announcement on higher road tax for 4-wheel drive vehicles, the Scottish Crofting Foundation has written to all Highlands and Islands MPs seeking a reduced rate for vehicles which are a necessity of rural life.
NFU - Farmers reminded to apply for Transport Authorisation

NFU Scotland is reminding all livestock producers that new rules governing the transportation of animals came into force across Europe in January. Amongst the new rules is a requirement for any farm business transporting animals over 65 kilometres (approximately 40 miles) to secure authorisation to do so.
Land Management in European Mountain Regions

The challenges facing small farmers in marginal areas across Europe are often remarkably similar but solutions to them differ widely. A talk in Plockton next Wednesday looks at initiatives being put in place in 10 mountainous regions across Europe, including Skye & Lochalsh, to protect traditional land management and ensure the viability of rural communities.

“Crofting Brand” Working Group Meets

A working group formed to progress the Scottish Crofting Foundation’s “Crofting Brand” proposal had its first meeting last week. The group consists of crofters, SCF officers and directors and experts on local food and marketing from Scottish Agricultural College and the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group.

Better Border Controls will help Animal Welfare

The Scottish Crofting Foundation today called on government to do more to prevent the import of serious animal diseases and said much better biosecurity controls at UK ports and airports is needed. The Foundation was responding to a Scottish Executive consultation on principles of responsibility and cost sharing for animal health and welfare.

Crofters Back Call for Fairer Appeals System

Proposals put forward by NFUS for a shake-up of the subsidy appeals system received support from the Scottish Crofting Foundation today. SCF Director Hugh Donaldson said "We fully support the NFUS call for an overhaul of the penalties and appeals system. Like them, we also frequently find members having support withheld for simple clerical errors, made in entirely good faith. In some cases, losses are substantial, having a huge impact on the income of the household. Penalties are often disproportionate to the 'crime' - forgetting to put a tick in the correct box or mistakenly turning animals out in a field one day early.
