Crofting Reform - Historic Legislation greeted with Silence
Wednesday, January 31, 2007
The passing of the slated Crofting Reform Bill was greeted with silence by crofters, who warn that there are burning issues that need addressing before the “Shucksmith Inquiry” is launched. A cropped version of the Crofting Reform Etc Bill, which had been widely criticised, passed through its final stage in the Scottish Parliament last week. Whilst an almost audible sigh of relief could be heard in the Scottish Executive, crofters were unmoved by the alleged solemnity of the historic moment and pointed out that this was only the baseline for the reform.

Poor Consultation on Marine Park Leaves Unanswered Questions
Friday, January 05, 2007
The consultation process on Scotland’s first Coastal and Marine National Park, which closes on 10th January, has been ‘rushed, casual and shallow’ the Scottish Crofting Foundation (SCF) has claimed. SCF Chairman Norman Leask said, “A couple of PR consultants appeared in places like supermarket car parks and invited people to be consulted on an apparently random basis. The ‘consultation’ consisted of a few ‘tick-the-box’ questions, and the consultants doing the job couldn’t answer any questions about what they were consulting on. The whole process has been pretty poor and would need to be improved on if there is to be meaningful discussion about this issue.”
